Position Summary
The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial management and administration of Kwakiutl First Nation. Reporting to the Senior Administrator, this role ensures that financial systems, policies, and procedures operate effectively and in compliance with applicable legislation, funding agreements, and First Nation governance requirements.
The Director of Finance will lead financial planning, budgeting, reporting, and risk management while supporting leadership in making informed strategic financial decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Nation’s financial administration systems.
- Prepare and supervise monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Monitor financial performance including yearly budgets of all departments of Kwakiutl First Nation and develop financial metrics, forecasts, and projections.
- Interpret financial information and provide recommendations to leadership.
- Ensure accurate maintenance of general ledger and charts of accounts.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets.
- Coordinate multi-year financial planning and forecasting.
- Work collaboratively with departments to develop financial plans and resource allocations.
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure financial operations comply with Nation policies, funding agreements, and applicable legislation.
- Monitor compliance with internal financial policies and procedures.
- Safeguard Nation assets and identify opportunities to mitigate financial risks.
- Support financial transparency and accountability to leadership and community members.
Financial Systems & Process Improvement
- Evaluate financial administration systems and recommend improvements.
- Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Support implementation of financial management tools and reporting systems.
Leadership & Team Development
- Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor finance staff.
- Foster a collaborative and professional team environment.
- Provide guidance and financial support to department managers and program staff.
Strategic Collaboration
- Work closely with leadership and departments to support economic development and community initiatives.
- Coordinate financial planning for future community programs, infrastructure projects, and services.
- All other job duties as assigned by the Senior Administrator
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Professional accounting designation CPA required.
Experience
- 5–8 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in First Nations governance, public sector, or non-profit environments.
- Experience with budgeting, financial reporting, and financial policy development.
- Knowledge of First Nations funding agreements, Indigenous Services Canada reporting, and community governance structures is an asset.

Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment within the community.
- Occasional evenings or community meetings may be required.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience $90,000 – $115,000.
