JOB SUMMARY
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and management of KNDC. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director implements Board-approved strategic priorities, manages organizational operations, oversees staff and contractors, and supports the development of sustainable economic opportunities for the Nation.
The Executive Director serves as the primary link between the Board and operations, ensuring that organizational activities align with KNDC’s mandate, governance framework, and strategic objectives.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership
• Implement the strategic direction established by the Board of Directors.
• Identify and advance economic development opportunities that align with community priorities.
• Support the Board in strategic planning, policy development, and organizational growth.
• Develop annual work plans, organizational goals, and performance measures.
Organizational Management
• Lead the day-to-day operations of KNDC.
• Supervise managers, staff, contractors, and consultants.
• Foster a positive, respectful, and accountable workplace culture.
• Develop operational policies, procedures, and systems.
Financial Oversight
• Develop annual budgets and financial forecasts.
• Monitor organizational financial performance.
• Support audits, financial reporting, and risk management activities.
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities, grants, partnerships, and investment opportunities.
Governance Support
• Serve as the primary advisor to the Board of Directors.
• Prepare Board packages, reports, recommendations, and briefing materials.
• Implement Board decisions and policies.
• Support effective governance practices and Board development.
Stakeholder Relations
• Represent KNDC with government agencies, funding organizations, industry partners, financial institutions, and other First Nations.
• Build and maintain productive partnerships that advance KNDC’s objectives.
• Support communication and engagement with Kwakiutl members and leadership.
Knowledge of Kwakiutl community, culture and language is an asset. It is paramount that all positions within the KNDC strive to communicate and serve the Kwakiutl people in a manner that respects, enhances and promotes the cultural identity and well being of both the individual and the community. This position will ensure cultural safety by:
• Gaining cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity
• Understanding and complying with any Kwakiutl policies or positions statements on “cultural safety” (and ensuring it is reflected in individual training and professional development plans)
• Ensuring that plans, policies, and activities undertaken promote the holistic health and well-being of the Kwakiutl in a way that incorporates and promotes the cultural aspects of the Kwakiutl People and traditions
• Overall assisting in the articulation and establishment of cultural influence expectation in KNDC Fisheries business planning and day-to-day operations
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
• Significant senior leadership experience in economic development, Indigenous organizations, business management, government, fisheries, or related sectors.
• Experience working with Boards of Directors and governance systems.
• Strong financial management and business planning skills.
• Demonstrated experience managing staff, budgets, projects, and organizational operations.
• Experience developing partnerships, negotiating agreements, and securing funding.
• Excellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.
• Understanding of Indigenous governance, economic development, and community engagement.
• Post-secondary education in business, public administration, economic development, resource management, or a related field is preferred.
Other Position Information
• Successful applicant must periodically undergo a police information check (PIC)
• Pre-employment and post-incident drug/alcohol testing is a requirement
• Travel to various destinations outside the typical worksite
• The successful applicant can expect to work in a variety of difference work environments, as well as work outside the normal business hours and to function independently
• Abide by KNDC/KBC organizational policies (i.e., personnel policy and other policies)
• Preference may be given to qualified Indigenous applicants
• Willing to perform other duties as assigned by the ED
