JOB SUMMARY
The fluent/proficient Kwak̕wala speaker will work in the language nest and speak only Kwak̕wala with the elder currently in the language nest. Together, you will engage with the students through games, stories, songs and play, all in Kwak̕wala. The hours are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support Kwak̕wala only during the 3 hours of language nest.
- Willing to help the teacher and other staff with language learning.
- Engage in Kwak̕wala games, songs and stories with the students.
- Assist with giving directions to the students in Kwak̕wala.
- Assist with the development of language resources if needed.
REQUIREMENTS
The Fluent/Proficient Kwak̕wala Speaker must be:
- Fluent or proficient in Kwak̕wala, or working towards proficiency.
- Experience working with children.
- Willing to help the teacher and other staff with language learning.
- Must maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of First Nation social and historical issues impacting First Nation communities.
Key relationships
- Students in the preschool program.
- Work closely with Preschool Teacher, Fluent Language Nest Elder, and other Kwakiutl Band Staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Mainly at Wagalus School, but some travel may be required (i.e., for training, meetings).
- Working in a harassment-and violence-free environment.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and own vehicle is preferred.
- Employees must provide a “Criminal Records Check.”
